How to Get Healthy Hair
2023’s all about putting our health first, and that includes our haircare routines. Whilst your skincare regime may be chock-full of the latest lotions and potions galore, we believe that your scalp and hair deserve the very best, too, which is why we’ve compiled our guide to getting healthier hair, including what to avoid and must-haves for your haircare stash. If you’re struggling with any of the following scalp and hair issues, fret not. A solution is at hand…
Damaged Hair
Hands up if you’ve overindulged over the party season, leaving a trail of sequins, Baileys and even a few strands of hair in your wake? Yep, many of us will be feeling the after-effects of too much heat styling in the coming months, which include dryness, split ends and even hair breakage. The solution? Step away from the hot tools for just a little white, and if you can’t be without your hair wand, use a heat protectant such as the Moroccanoil Perfect Defense 225ml (Heat Protection), which seeks to re-hydrate the hair whilst protecting against the damaging effects of heat styling up to 230 °C. If you’re experiencing extreme dryness, we recommend a moisturising shampoo like the Alfaparf Semi Di Lino Moisture Nutritive Shampoo 250ml and a deep treatment mask to be used once weekly (check out the Alfaparf Semi Di Lino Moisture Nutritive Mask 200ml). If you’re suffering from hair breakage, the Redken Extreme range will become your new bestie this year, whilst the trusty Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector 100ml is a must for relinking the hair’s bonds & reversing damage caused by heat styling and chemical treatments.
Hair Loss & Thinning
Suffering from thinning hair, or even hair loss? You’re not alone. Approximately 80% of men and 50% of women will experience hair loss in their lifetime, and contributing factors include heredity, hormonal changes and stress. It’s important to note that most of us lose 50-100 hairs everyday, so if you happen to see a couple of strands in the shower or on your pillow, there’s no need to worry. If you find that you’re losing more hair, however, there are a few things you can do to help reduce and manage it. You should avoid tight hairstyles, such as tight ponytails and braids which can pull on their hair. Remember that you are what you eat, so ensure to eat a balanced diet and get enough protein (which is what our hair is made from – a protein named keratin) which is rich in foods such as eggs, almonds and legumes like beans and lentils. This will help to strengthen your hair from the inside out. We also recommend using a Nioxin System Kit, such as the Nioxin - System Kit 2 (Noticeably Thinning, Fine), which amplifies hair texture while refreshing the scalp, delivering a healthy shine and protecting against breakage. Cystine amino acids help provide thicker-looking hair by increasing the fullness of each hair strand, reducing hair loss by strengthening against damage and breakage. White tea cleansing agents provide a refreshed scalp environment and add healthy shine to hair.
Dry Scalp, Itchy Scalp, Oily Scalp & Anti Dandruff
A healthy scalp is a key contributor to healthy hair. The scalp is essentially an extension of the face. Just as our faces may see dry or oily spells, so will our scalps. If you’re suffering from an oily scalp, you likely have greasy hair. This is caused by excess sebum. If this sounds like you, try washing your every 2-3 days with a scalp balancing shampoo, like the Alfaparf Semi Di Lino Scalp REBALANCE Balancing Shampoo 250ml, which has been uniquely designed for oily scalps, helping the scalp environment reduce excess sebum. It gently cleanses and normalises the scalp, effectively refreshing it and reducing sebum deposits. Others may suffer from a dry scalp, which can cause irritation, itchiness and sensitivity. This happens when the scalp loses too much moisture. We recommend washing your hair once to twice per week with the L'Oréal Professionnel Sensi Balance Shampoo 500ml, which is enriched with key ingredient sorbitol to cleanse, rebalance, sooth, refresh and comfort the scalp. It’s also recommended that you drink more water and consider adding more moisture to your home with a humidifier. Those with dry scalps may also experience dandruff, which affects approximately 50% of the world’s population. Treat dandruff by shampooing with the Kérastase Symbiose Purifying Anti-Dandruff Cellular Shampoo 250ml (for oily dandruff) or Kérastase Symbiose Moisturising Anti-Dandruff Cellular Shampoo 250ml (for dry dandruff). Use the Kérastase Symbiose Intensive Anti-Dandruff Cellular Night Serum 90ml overnight, which is a silicone-free and sulfate-free night serum designed to act on reducing visible dandruff by eliminating it at the source.
